PostsAfghanistan’s embroidery traditions are as varied as the communities and geographies they come from. Embroidery Traditions of Afghanistan at SOAS Gallery @soas_gallery brings together textiles and garments from the Karun Thakar Collection, alongside objects from the V&A @vamuseum Silk, wool, beads and coins, worked through regional techniques and motifs, offer a close look at the textile practices of Afghan communities. What makes the it particularly compelling is its focus on lesser-seen traditions: some highly local, some shaped by movement across borders, and several that have since disappeared or become increasingly rare. Textile, technique and cultural exchange. @tokreeshopjaipur

PostsThe tradition of Rakhi has historically extended beyond the immediate relationship of a sister tying a thread to her brother. In many families, rakhis were sent by post to grandparents, maternal uncles, nephews and other members of the family, with the recipient often responding with an acknowledgement and dastoor. A bua could also tie rakhi to members of her maternal home, reaffirming her connection to the family she came from. At its core, Rakhi is a raksha sutra, a sacred thread of protection. The practice of tying a thread, or moli, is deeply rooted in Hindu ritual and appears in early religious traditions. A thread tied during a ceremony is often associated with protection, intention and sankalp. It is understood to hold the energy and intention with which it is tied. The Rakhi therefore represents more than a sibling ritual. It is a physical thread that marks protection, remembrance and enduring familial connection. These photographs of one such Rakhi celebration ✨

PostsThe Fakirani Jats of Kutch 🔹 A series of images tracing the lives, landscapes and traditions of the Fakirani Jats, a pastoral community of Kutch whose history is closely tied to the desert, grasslands, mangroves and coastline. Traditionally nomadic or semi nomadic, Fakirani Jat herders move with their animals in search of seasonal grazing grounds. They share a particularly close relationship with the Kharai camel, an indigenous breed known for crossing seawater creeks and feeding in Kutch’s mangrove forests. Their distinctive pakka dwellings, pastoral way of life and the visual traditions shaped by the women of the community offer another window into the many cultures that have flourished across Kutch. This series is an invitation to look closer at a community, its landscape and the knowledge carried across generations. Via IndianHistoryPosts

𝘑𝘢𝘮𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘪 is a handloom technique where motifs are inlaid directly into the weave, creating patterns that seem to float within the fabric. PostsMan’s jama (robe), Bharatpur, c. 1855. Constructed in fine muslin, this garment follows the traditional wrap format; crossing over the chest and fastening at the side. The silhouette is defined by its fullness: extensive yardage of fabric gathered at the bodice and released into a wide, flowing skirt. The use of muslin is central to its effect. Lightweight and breathable, it allows for volume without weight, creating a form that is structured yet fluid. The fall of the textile, rather than tailoring alone, determines the final shape of the garment. At Tokree, such historic constructions continue to inform our approach, where fabric, cut, and movement remain fundamental to the design process.

PostsThe mojari traces its origins to the courts of the Mughal Empire, where refinement and opulence shaped every element of dress. In keeping with imperial taste, these slippers were richly ornamented; embroidered with gold and silver zari threads and, at times, set with precious stones—to signal the status and authority of the wearer. Distinct for their sharply upturned toes, this style of footwear came to be known as the khussa. When first introduced, its silhouette was unlike anything else; structured yet supple, ceremonial yet wearable. PostsLeheriya Stripes |||| a folded paagh from a trove of Rajasthan’s dyed cloth. Woven in thin cotton (or fine silk), these turban-lengths were diagonally rolled, resist-tied and dyed using natural pigments - indigo, madder or turmeric among them, to evoke the desert’s shifting dunes and the monsoon’s rippling water. The Leheriya waves appear in variegated pinks, yellows, greens and ochres - some bold and saturated, others soft and faded; each stripe a memory of a particular dip and dye. ;a fragment of craft history, a source of pattern, colour and rhythm that still inspires. @tokreeshopjaipur

PostsWhat began in the courts of Jaipur, Udaipur, and Bikaner as real gold and silver ribbons, hammered, flattened, and woven into narrow tapes, slowly evolved into the craft we recognise today as gota patti. From royal processions to wedding garments, gota was used to outline, frame, and guide the eye across textiles. Artisans cut these ribbons into small shapes — phool, kairi, leher, patti — each with its own name and purpose. The wider tapes were known as gota, the slimmer ones as kinari, and the most delicate edging trims as lappa or magji. Together they formed the architectural borders of a garment: hems, veils, odhnis, and ghaghras all structured by these metallic lines. Even as the materials shifted from precious metals to silver-laminated or metallised ribbons, the handwork stayed constant - motifs cut, folded, and appliquéd with tiny stitches so the metal appears to sit lightly on the textile. It remains one of Rajasthan’s most enduring craft traditions: humble in technique, luminous in effect, and inseparable from the region’s visual identity.
