Love is in the Savannah! Sometimes the strongest wildlife photograph is the one where the animal doesn’t dominate the frame. Two lions. An endless sea of grass. A storm building above them. I deliberately kept the lions small here because the real story was the scale of the African wilderness, the dramatic sky, the layers of green and that tiny moment of behaviour unfolding within it. This is the kind of wildlife photography I’m increasingly drawn towards: not just documenting the animal, but using light, landscape, behaviour and composition to create a sense of place. BROTHERHOOD! In the wild, male lions often form coalitions, usually with their siblings or age mates. These alliances aren’t just companionship, they are a survival strategy. Coalitions of 2 to 4 males have significantly higher success in taking over prides and can hold territories for longer compared to solitary males. A single male might struggle to defend a pride, but a coalition can control multiple prides at once, increasing their chances of passing on their genes. Interestingly, within many coalitions, dominance is often shared, especially between brothers, with mating access and responsibilities divided rather than constantly fought over. Giza fever hasn’t ended yet! Giza week continues with another environmental wide-angle series of this extraordinary cat! 😍 These images showcase just how bold she is! The first frame was shot on the @sonyalphain 50-150mm f2 @ 50mm literally right under my jeep! During our last Laikipia photography expedition we were fortunate to get exclusive time with her on multiple drives. The very first drive itself turned highly rewarding, giving us rare opportunities to photograph Giza under different light and backgrounds. As you can see, her habitat is a dry scrub landscape scattered with cactus. Her primary prey here is the Dik-dik. But what truly makes Giza unique is her behaviour. She doesn’t always rely on the typical leopard ambush or chase. Instead, she uses shadow, terrain and even safari vehicles as camouflage. Being melanistic, she has mastered moving through harsh light and deep shadow, blending effortlessly even in broad daylight. She comes unbelievably close to her prey, using darkness as her ally. Sharing a few of my most rewarding frames from Ranthambhore last season. Mosaic Cat ! Mumbai’s Aarey colony is one of the best examples of humans and wildlife Co-existing with each other in harmony! This peaceful coexistence is only possible due to the continued efforts by the volunteers and forest department to spread awareness among the locals about leopards. The locals living there doesn’t treat these leopards as a threat anymore and they share common spaces. Furthermore, the immense effort in installing these camera traps during heavy monsoon last year yielded us this image. One of my #personalbest and teams best effort till date!
